The CRA is a Canadian federal agency that administers tax laws for the Government of Canada and for most provinces and territories. It also oversees the registration of charities in Canada and delivers both social and economic benefits, as well as incentive programs through the tax system. The CRA is responsible for reviewing tax returns and collecting taxes owing.
The Canada Revenue Agency has recently introduced a new, two-step verification process for clients to authorize a representative (or accountant) using their ‘Represent a Client’ service more efficient and secure. The new process makes it easier for clients to confirm who has access to their personal and tax information, helping them play an active role in protecting their information.
The first step in authorizing a CRA representative is to register for My Account and My Business Account.
The CRA has created two step-by-step videos that walk through the process of registering:
· How to Register for My Account
· How to Register for My Business Account
Once registered, please enable email notifications so you are notified when you receive a new authorization request. To find out more about how to enable email notifications, please select instructions for individuals or businesses.
Please notify our office once registration is complete and email notifications are enabled.
The CRA 'My Account' profile allows you to track your personal tax and benefit information, view or change your tax return, view your RRSP limit, change your address and much more.
The CRA 'My Business Account' profile allows you to access company GST/HST, payroll, corporate income taxes, and much more.
To sign in or register for an online profile go to the Government of Canada E-services . Registration for a new profile may take a few weeks. Once the registration process is complete, a CRA security code will be mailed to you. This security code can be entered during the 'My Account' or 'My Business Account' registration process to access your online profile.
Accountants prepare your services, including tax returns, based on the information you provide. Your accountant only knows what you tell them. It is important to update your accountant of any financial changes have occurred over the taxation year prior to filing taxes, such as change of marital status, loss of employment, or sale of assets.
If the accountant is providing services to an incorporated company, the accountant will require a director of the corporation to sign a management representation letter prior to filing the corporate tax return with the CRA. By signing the management representation letter, the director agrees that nothing is present in the financial statements that they know to be false or misleading.
Over-contributing to you RRSP account can be costly. RRSP contributions that exceed your allowable RRSP threshold are subject to a 1% per month tax. Before you invest in an RRSP, check the balance on your CRA Notice of Assessment, or call us to confirm your RRSP balance.
All individuals receiving wages, and under the age of 65, must contribute to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) based on pensionable earnings. CPP contributions are not a tax – they are an investment into your pension plan. The more you contribute to CPP over your working life, the larger the pension amount you will receive when you retire. The amount of your CPP retirement pension depends on (1) the age you decide to start drawing upon your pension, (2) the amount and length of time you contributed to CPP, and (3) your average earnings during your working life. If you do not contribute to CPP, you won’t receive CPP payments when you reach age 65.
In 2021, the maximum monthly pension of a new recipient at age 65 was $1,200. The average amount in June 2021 was $620. This amount increases with inflation each year.
