2020 Tax Deadlines

PERSONAL TAXES
- Not self-employed: If you or your spouse did not earn business income in 2020, the deadline for filing a return is April 30, 2021. Taxes owing are also due April 30, 2021. This is the most common deadline for taxpayers.
- Self-employed: If you or your spouse earned business income in 2020, the deadline for filing a return is June 15, 2021. However, taxes owing are due April 30, 2021.
- Tax instalments: If required, they are due March 15, June 15, September 15, and December 15.
- RRSP contributions: If you would like to deduct your RRSP contribution from your 2020 income, the contribution deadline is March 1, 2021.
CORPORATE TAXES
Corporate tax returns: Corporate tax filings are due 6 months after year-end.
- If the fiscal year-end is the last day of a month, the return is due by the last day of the 6th month after the year-end. E.g. Year-end: December 31, 2020. Deadline: June 30, 2021.
- If the fiscal year-end is not the last day of a month, the return is due by the same day of the 6th month after the year-end. E.g. Year-end: October 15, 2020. Deadline: April 15, 2021.
Corporate taxes owing: Taxes owing are due 2 months after the year-end, unless an exception applies, in which case taxes owing are due 3 months after the year-end. For the exception to apply, the following criteria must be met:
- The corporation is a Canadian Controlled Private Corporation (CCPC)
- The corporation claimed the small business deduction for the current or previous year.
- The corporation and all associated corporations (if applicable) had taxable income less than $500,000 in the previous year.
GST / HST RETURNS
- Monthly filers: Return and amounts owing are due 1 month after the end of the reporting period. E.g. Filing period: June 1-30, 2021. Deadline: July 31, 2021.
Quarterly filers: Return and amounts owing are due 1 month after the end of the reporting period. E.g. Filing period: June 1-Sept 30, 2021. Deadline: October 31, 2021.
- Annual filers (Business with Dec 31, 2020 year-end): Return and amounts owing are due 3 months after the reporting period end date. E.g. Filing period: July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021. Deadline: September 30, 2021.
- Annual filers (Individuals with Dec 31, 2020 year-end): Deadlines mirror tax deadlines for self-employed individuals. Due dates in 2021: GST owing due April 30, 2021. Filing of GST returns due June 15, 2021.
